The Black Keys Nominated For Grammy Awards

Mainstream music industry recognition is not needed to validate what music fans of The Black Keys already know, but the multiple nominations for The Black Keys’ album Brothers are nevertheless welcomed.

Music awards are invariably one monster game of roulette though they are indicative of a broad appeal and reflective of The Black Keys’ undoubted flavour of the month/year status.

Brothers has received Grammy nominations for:

Best Alternative Album
Best Rock Song
Best Rock Performance by a Group or Duo
Best Instrumental
Michael Carney was also nominated for Best Art Direction for Brothers
Congrats to Dan and Pat and brother Michael. Not to mention all those behind the scenes who also made it possible for them to shine. Crikey, this is sounding like an acceptance speech…

If Dan and Pat’s interviews are anything go by just imagine the acceptance speech. Got to think they’ll at least win in one of those categories. I’m picking Best Alternative Music Album.

The nomination of “Black Mud” for Best Instrumental intrigues or doesn’t depending on your view of the Grammy’s nomination process. By any measure I’d always thought of Black Mud as an after thought album filler, a soundscape to transition the song order on Brothers. It was recorded at Dan’s Easy Eye Studios after the main Muscle Shoals session.

Whoever would have thought this would have happened, eight years ago, not least even a year ago? Strange times, indeed.

Blues is a continuous growing genre. It always has been and always will be. What the exact reason for this universal obsession which started as nothing more than cotton field folk music, no one can really tell you. Maybe because of it’s natural sound, maybe because blues is so personal, maybe because it welcomes influence and maybe because blues tells great stories. More than likely it’s because of all of those.

Blues has been passed from father to son for generations and each time gathering momentum. Now taken on by niche record labels which push the boundaries of this folk music make it more exciting than ever.

A man leading the charge is Patrick Boissel, owner of Alive Records. He has been solely responsible for bringing the likes of The Black Keys, Two Gallants, Black Diamond Heavies, Left Lane Cruiser and so many more to our shores. Alive Records has a unique sound and a belief in pure, natural music which maintains its identity by bringing through bands with a defined raw power. Leaders on both sides of the aisle try to hammer out an agreement on fucking over Americans.

WASHINGTON—After months of committee meetings and hundreds of hours of heated debate, the United States Congress remained deadlocked this week over the best possible way to deny Americans health care.

"Both parties understand that the current system is broken," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters Monday. "But what we can't seem to agree upon is how to best keep it broken, while still ensuring that no elected official takes any political risk whatsoever. It’s a very complicated issue."

"Ultimately, though, it's our responsibility as lawmakers to put these differences aside and focus on refusing Americans the health care they deserve," Pelosi added.

This talented musician has served time in the Greenhornes and the Soledad Brothers, two underrated garage rock bands from Cincinnati, Ohio. Brian Olive's self-titled solo album is a pretty impressive self-produced affair that takes the trashy, rollicking, Brit invasion revivalist sound of his former groups and then injects a healthy dose of bluesy soul backbeats and N'awlins horns to the mix. There's also a nice haze of gentle acid-washed psychedelia to his production that reminds me of some fellow '60s revivalists across the pond, the (Band of) Bees. Tracks like "Echoing Light," "See Me Mariona" and "There Is Love" are great stoner, psych-pop nuggets while "Calling All Around" and "Ida Red" are letter perfect Beggars Banquet-styled blues rock, reminiscent of Olive's former bands. But it's songs like "Stealin" and "Jubilee Line" that seal the deal, impressive rollicking jaunts that benefit from his impressive horn arrangements and a propulsive foot stomping backbeat. A great, solid listen from start to finish, if you've been diggin' on the sounds of King Khan, Brian Jonestown Massacre or the aforementioned Bees, you'll definitely want to spend some time with this record.
